“I know we need to have the Bible as a regular part of my life, but how do I do that?”
Here are 5 ways:
- Listen – to the sermon, to a podcast, to a Bible app reading it to you on the way to work.
- Read – set aside 5-15 minutes a day to begin with, reading through a book of the Bible a chapter at a time. Try the Gospel of John in the New Testament first. There are some great stories about Jesus in that book.
- Study – Look at just a few verses at a time analyzing why these particular words were used by the author, following the cross references to other passages that speak about the same topic. Ask yourself, “so what?” as you look for a practical application of what you learn.
- Meditate – “chew” on the verse, get all the juice out of it. Picture in your mind the situation described in the verses; put yourself in the picture; using simple stick figures, try your hand at drawing a representation of the lesson learned.
- Memorize – choose one special verse to “put in your heart” by learning it word-perfect. Put it on a small card to review it throughout the day, or on your bathroom mirror to review every morning and evening.
Each method in this sequence requires an increasing commitment of time and effort. I will deal with each of them in greater depth in future posts, but this should get your started. Pick one of them and get to it!
