Daily Instruction – Like Daily Eating

“Reading my Bible doesn’t do any good. I don’t even remember what I read this morning”

The Bible is our spiritual food. It nourishes us spiritually. Through it our “spiritual muscles” are strengthened so over time we can carry out heavier tasks for the Lord.

Let me ask you: what did you eat for lunch last Thursday? What about dinner Monday night? Do you remember? Does remembering or not remembering what you ate affect how well that food nourished your body? No, of course not!

The same applies to reading the Bible. Even if I don’t remember what I read this morning, or last week, it doesn’t negate the fact that in the moment, I was nourishing my spirit with the “bread of life.” Over time, all that I put into my spirit will bring about spiritual health. (BTW, I’ll be writing a blog about spiritual journaling later, which will help with remembering!)

The contrary is also true. When I go without physical food for a long period, I get weak and I’m more vulnerable to attack by disease. Similarly, when I go without eating spiritually, my spirit is weaker and more susceptible to the temptation of sin.

So, just like a healthy diet (experts include eating 6 small meals daily, drinking lots of water, and incorporating regular movement/exercise), a healthy spiritual diet on the Word of God will prepare me for the daily living of a life in Christ.
